Leave an Obligation at the Door
Why Does Herr R. Run Amok?
Rainer Werner Maria Fassbinder & Michael Fengler, 1970, 88'
"Twenty-two scenes in the life of Herr R. (the R. stands for Raab-Kurt Raab, this film's star, and one of Fassbinder's most constant collaborators from the Antitheater group days). He's a draftsman for an architectural office, provider and patriarch for a family comprised of one willowy Teutonic wife (Lilith Ungerer) and a young son. The title is sarcastic; boxed-in Herr R., who even makes his living by drawing walls (he prefers doing the windows), has no opportunity to run amok-his chartered life is divided into dull blocks of obligation: coffee breaks, company get-togethers, weekend afternoons with the parents, after-school conferences with teachers, doctor appointments.

Chihuahuan Desert Conference, "A Desert Without Borders" November 13-14, 2010 at the Carlos M. Ramirez TecH2O Water Resources Learning Center and the El Paso Zoo.
The mission of the conference is to promote education about the Chihuahuan Desert and to encourage educators and researchers working in the region to network and share knowledge. At the conference you will be able to hear a wide selection of interesting presentations about the animals and plants of our desert plus special presentations by Carter Smith, Texas Parks and Wildlife Executive Director, and David J. Simon, Director, New Mexico State Parks. Registration includes breaks, lunch and an evening social event with drinks and heavy hors d'oeuvres at the El Paso Zoo.
Last year our City adopted a Sustainability Plan with the goal of achieving international recognition for successful preservation of our Chihuahuan desert heritage for all time. All of those involved in planning this important meeting realize that education is key to both preservation and conservation of our desert. Learning to share our remaining wild lands with the animals and plants of the Chihuahuan Desert ecosystem also helps us to both maintain and improve the quality of life for our entire community.
We need your support and I hope that you will consider registering for the conference online at http://www.chihuahuandesert.org/conference.html.
If you are unable to attend perhaps you would be interested in sponsoring a
student or a teacher to attend.

On Saturday, November 20, 2011, Ballroom Marfa presents Austin, Tx's The Rat Trap Ball. Festivities take place at the brand new Lost Horse Saloon here in Marfa, featuring Rat Trap Ball house band, The Royal Butchers. In the word of its creators, "The Rat Trap Ball is an underground 45 rpm dance party from beyond the reach of sanity. The extreme forms of true blue rock n' roll will be well represented: crude garage, perverse R&B;, and hick boppers. It's a worshipful and ecstatic experience, almost like church. A twisted and futuristic church of outsider American rock n' roll, where you don't get saved and you don't behave."
The Royal Butchers have been the house band of The Rat Trap Ball at some of the ricketiest dives and dumps in Austin. Their sound is a pounding & rattling agglomeration of Texas garage rock n'roll. It's elemental animal music played with the intention of bringing strange people together to celebrate our true nature as beasts of the night. The Royal Butchers is the latest project from critically acclaimed songwriter Aaron Blount, formerly of Knife in The Water.
Doors at 9 pm, and The Royal Butchers perform at 10 pm. Rat Trap DJs play until close. Bring your dancing shoes

Leave a Sausage at the Door
Mother Ksters Goes to Heaven
(Mutter Ksters Fahrt zum Himmel)
Rainer Werner Fassbinder, 1975, 112'
Frau Kusters is preparing dinner late one seemingly ordinary afternoon in her seemingly ordinary kitchen in Frankfurt, Germany. She wants to add canned sausages to the stew, her annoying daughter-in-law thinks otherwise. The point, we soon find out, is moot: Mr. Kusters has murdered the personnel director at the soap factory where he works before committing suicide.
Like all of Fassbinder's best films, Mother Ksters Goes to Heaven is many things at once. It's simultaneously a deeply compassionate portrait of a working-class woman and a scathing satire of her exploitation; emotionally rich but politically and intellectually dense, filled with arguments and counter-arguments galore; psychologically astute yet highly stylized and visually lush. It's a comedy, a drama, and much more.
