Monday Night Movies at the Marfa Book Co, 7pm, Program 10:
Build a Ship, Sail to Sadness, Laurin Federlein, 2007, 68
Build a Ship, Sail to Sadness is an absurdist musical travelogue. It follows
Vincent, a solitary young man, as he rides on his moped through a deserted
mountain region. His mission is to heal the loneliness of the few isolated
inhabitants by introducing a mobile disco to the region.
Laurin Federleins feature debut is a film about the joy of music and the yearning for the elevation and ecstasy of art. It is also a melancholy statement about the solitude of a visionary mind and a trip to a reality which we have already forgotten exists. (Ludmila Cvikova, Intl Film Festival Rotterdam)

Wilderness First Aid Course
November 14-16
Presented by The Expedition School
This course is designed specifically for those who work and/or live in remote areas where Emergency Medical Service (EMS) response is delayed 30 minutes or more. Typically when help is delayed, the rescuer spends more time sustaining the patient and/or evacuating the patient to a safer environment than in an urban setting. This course provides information on how to respond to those wilderness medical emergencies and trains students to recognize the signs and symptoms of various maladies.
We will discuss the most typical dangers that apply to your environment and create scenarios that best simulate a true emergency that may arise in your area. Class will be held at Circle Dug Ranch, Candelaria, TX.

The Whole Shootin' Match, Eagle Pennell, 1978, 109'
A Texas myth revisited with contentious discussion led by TJ and Roscoe on one side of the aisle, Ralph and Joe Cash opposing. Eagle Pennell's first feature details the tragic-comic struggles of two small-time
schemers, Loyd and Frank, desperate to land their big break. Through its
anecdotal narrative and fresh observation of its characters, the film intimately
captures a time and place (Austin, Texas 1977) with its atmospheric
photography and rough-hewn charm.

Mock up on Mu, Craig Baldwin, 2008, 110
Science-fiction, pulp and underground culture interwoven into a glorious foundfootage
spectacle film by the master of the narrative collage Craig Baldwin. High
time somebody started a fan club! Years after the masterful films Tribulation
99: Alien Anomalies Under America, Oh No Coronado, and Sonic Outlaws,
there's another new found-footage spectacle film by the master of the narrative
collage, Craig Baldwin. For those not familiar with his approach, he constructs
his films using an extensive collection of found film material from the 1950s,
1960s and 1970s from various scientific, informative and obscure Hollywood
films. Scenes and fragments that reflect the paranoia of that age are combined
with fiction shot in a matching style in order to create a hybrid film universe of
science fiction, pulp and underground culture. In Mock up on Mu, several real
figures from the American West Coast subculture play the leading roles: Jack
Parsons, prototype crazy scientist and inventor of rocket fuel, L. Ron Hubbard,
SF writer and later founder of Scientology, and Marjorie Cameron, beatnik artist
and mother of the new-age movement, with in the background their shared
relationship with the occultism of Aleister Crowley. Baldwin forges all these
mainly true stories into a hyperbolic allegory about increasing militarism in
space and the commercial sell-out of the personal yearning for interpretation and
leisure. (EvtH, IFFR)

Radio On... Christopher Petit, 1979, 102'
Christopher Petit's post-punk journey RADIO ON (1979) has been a cult film
since its initial release and is one of the most striking feature debuts in British
cinema - a haunting blend of edgy mystery story and existential road movie,
crammed with eerie evocations of English landscape and weather. Co-produced by Wim Wenders and featuring Sting's first film performance, RADIO ON is austere in narrative and captures the lurking disenchantment of the British youth movements of the time.
For the first time since its brief, original release, RADIO ON is available again.
The film was recently restored by the British Film Institute and enjoyed
accolades in the press as well as sold-out screenings around the UK and Europe.
