Description:
On January 10, Ballroom Marfa will host a panel discussion, Red-Haired Stepchild: Making Visual Art in New Orleans, with Dan Cameron and artists Skylar Fein, Srdjan Loncar, and Dan Tague, the curator and three artists from their upcoming spring visual arts exhibition, The World According to New Orleans.
This spring, Ballroom Marfa will collaborate with Cameron on The World According to New Orleans, a curatorial examination of the art and visual culture of New Orleans, with a particular focus on areas of overlap between self-taught and avant-garde tendencies. New Orleans' location at the geographic fringe of the continental United States, in close proximity to Cuba, Haiti, and Mexico, has generated a unique blend of distinctions between artistic genres and vernacular traditions, and each of the artists in the exhibition has produced work that in some way challenges many of these time-worn distinctions. The exhibition will include work by several artists who were self-taught, as well as documentary photographs and film that examine neighborhood and community expressions.

Granada Theater in Alpine
Description:
Mark your calendar for Saturday, January 29, at the Granada Theater in Alpine. Thats when local landowners will host a benefit dinner and dance for pronghorn restoration.
Pronghorn populations in the Trans-Pecos have experienced unprecedented declines and are at an all-time low of less than 4,800.
Responding to the crisis, West Texas landowners, sportsmen, civic leaders, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, concerned citizens, and researchers with the Borderlands Research Institute have rallied together to raise money to restock pronghorn to rangelands where their numbers have been depleted.
A surplus of pronghorn has been identified in the Texas Panhandle, where their populations have been increasing. The fundraising effort will not only benefit Trans-Pecos pronghorn populations, but will also relieve the pressure of growing populations that are depredating crops in the Panhandle.
All funds and donations from the benefit dinner and dance will be used to cover costs associated with restocking and monitoring pronghorn in the Trans-Pecos.
Local landowners will be serving locally grown ribeye steaks with all the fixings including baked potatoes, vegetables, iced tea and desserts. A cash bar will also be available.
Following dinner, musical entertainment will be provided by Craig Carter and the Spur of the Moment Band.
Tickets ($50 each) must be purchased in advance and can be obtained from the Alpine Chamber of Commerce, the Sul Ross State University Range Animal Science Center, and other locations in Van Horn, Fort Davis, Marfa and Fort Stockton.
To purchase tickets online or for a list of additional sites to purchase tickets, go to http://www.sulross.edu/brinrm/pronghorn.htm or call the Borderlands Research Institute at 432-837-8488.
Join us January 29 and help us restore pronghorn to the Trans-Pecos.
