MARFA BOOK CO. MONDAY NIGHT MOVIES: PROGRAM 18
4 JANUARY 2023 | 7:00 PM SHARP | BYOB
Aus der Zeit / Out of Time, Harald Friedl, Austria, 80, 2006
The film is a painfully, tenderly funny portrait of a dying breed: the independent
family store owners in Vienna. In a Europe, where economic prudence is
becoming the rule, where "big" either eclipses or absorbs "small", "traditional"
"Mom & Pop" shops are vanishing at an alarming rate. Out of Time is a
documentary about four of this dying breed of small local shops: a butcher shop, a
drug store, a leatherwear shop and a button shop. By the end of the film only one
of these will have survived. Silently observed by the camera, the film unfolds as a
portrayal about memories, relationships, working conditions, love, loneliness and
the passing of time.

ART IN THE AUDITORIUM at Ballroom Marfa
OPENING RECEPTION
Friday, 29 January 2010, 7 - 9 PM
ARTIST TALK with AIDA RUILOVA
Saturday, 30 January 2010, 4 PM
On 29 January 2010, Ballroom Marfa begins the second installment of its annual video series Art in the Auditorium. Organized by Whitechapel Gallery, London, Art in the Auditorium showcases some of the most exciting artists working in film and video through a global collaboration between art spaces in Europe, Latin America, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. As the representative from North America, Ballroom Marfa has selected Ada Ruilova and two of her most recent works, Two-Timers, 2008 and Meet the Eye, 2009. Ada Ruilova makes the techniques of montage, repetition and sound her subjects in works that are ultimately concerned with the creation of ambiance and atmosphere. Across stylistically diverse scenarios, each of Ruilova's films and videos are dedicated to a single happening that is steeped in inaccessible symbolism. As if entering a film halfway through, the viewer is only privy to a segment of a larger complex narrative. With no setting of the scene and no climax, Ruilova's works inhabit the filmic moments in which psychological space is developed.
