Friends of the Marfa Public Library launches The Big Read: Marfa Reads Bless Me, Ultima.  Over 30 community-wide events and book group discussions.  Visit the Friends' web site (www.friendsofmarfalibrary.org) for a complete calendar of events. 

February 1, 6-8PM:  Opening reception for new show Pepper Brown 1926-1999 Paintings, Drawings & Sketches.  Greasewood Gallery at the Hotel Paisano.  432-729-4134.

February 2, 6PM:  Ballroom Marfa presents Running After Disaster.  Lecture and exclusive film screening with Mel Chin "9-11 / 9-11 Chile / USA" .  Admission is free and open to the public.  Goode Crowley Theater, Austin St, Marfa. 

February 14-16:  "I'm With Cupid" at Tillie Arts of Marfa.  A  weekend of visual art, music and performance. Looking for something different to do for Valentine's Day? Join us for a romantic, art-a-licious weekend in the desert...and see the lights!

February 15, 6-8PM:  Opening reception for Andrea Zuill's solo exhibit "concepts of identity" at Galleri Urbane, 212 E San Antonio St.  432-729-4200.

February 16:  SweetArt Ball at the Hotel Paisano Ballroom featuring the "Texana Dames".  Dancing, Silent Auction and Fabulous Dessert Buffet.  To benefit the Marfa Studio of Arts "Studio in the Elementary School" program.  Tickets are $40 single and $80 per couple and available through the Marfa Studio of Arts, 106 East San Antonio, Marfa, (432) 729-4616 or marfastudio.org.  Sponsored by the Marfa National Bank.

February 29, 6-8PM:  Marfa Chamber of Commerce's Annual Open House.  Citizen, Volunteer, Educator and Business of the Year will be recognized.  Open to the community. This year's open house celebration will be held at Tillie Arts of Marfa, Hwy 90 W & S Plateau (behind the Dairy Queen).


APRIL, 2008

April 4 & 5, 2008Marfa, Texas to be dedicated as the National Soaring Museum's 15th National Landmark of Soaring.  A reception will be held on April 4th at the Hotel Paisano.  Banquet with guest speaker George Moffat, winner of 1969 US National Contest and the 1970 World Soaring Championships in Marfa, on Saturday April 5th.  Contact Burt Compton at burtcompton@aol.com for flying schedule or information on accommodations.  View photos and the history of soaring at Marfa at flygliders.com.

MAY, 2008 

May 1-5:  Marfa Film Festival  (432) 729-1948.  Join us for this premiere event.   

May 9:  Artist's Reception, 5-8PM, for new show "Reflections of Flowers and Clay" at Catchlight Gallery, 117 East Holland Ave in Alpine.    Works by Marfa artist Marie Blazek will be featured.   

May 17:  Ikebana and painting demonstrations by Marie Blazek and Merrian Sohl at Catchlight Gallery in Alpine. 

May 24 & 25:  The Big Bend Hall of Fame Cowboy Rendezvous is held each Memorial Day Weekend at the County Roping Arena in Marfa.

 

July, 2008

July 1-31:  Twin Souls Gallery in Fort Davis hosts a show of Jeanne Amis' handmade pots and baskets.  The date for an opening reception will be announced closer to opening date.

August, 2008

August 29 - 31:  Celebrate the mystery with us at the Marfa Lights Festival held each Labor Day Weekend.

August 30 & 31 - Marfa Live Arts presents Sordid Lives at the Goode Crowley Theater.

October

Oct 11 & 12 - The Chinati Foundation hosts its annual Open House weekend.
