Exhibition Walkthrough with Artists: Sat, 2 October, 2 pm
Music Performance by Ty Segall: Sat, 2 October, 9 pm, at The Capri
Ballroom Marfa is pleased to announce the opening of Immaterial, an exhibition that will focus on the physical and psychic tensions between form, color, and space across varied visual and structural mediums. Curated by Executive Director Fairfax Dorn, the exhibition seeks to examine the metaphysical aspects of artistic production through a selection of artworks that challenge the use of material and space, formalism and abstraction. By using the exhibition as a forum to contemplate process-driven practices, Immaterial will consider art's potential to transcend conscious states through a plurality of visual languages. The exhibition will feature work by Barbara Kasten, Rachel Khedoori, Esther Kls, Liz Larner, Erlea Maneros Zabala, Linda Matalon, Julie Mehretu, and Charline von Heyl, including new commissions by Rosy Keyser, Laleh Khorramian, Heather Rowe, and Erin Shirreff.
The thematic thread of Immaterial traces the relationship between the processes of abstraction, formalism, and minimalism. Furthermore, Immaterial will investigate an artist's use of material, color, and form to produce an image or object, which can create both concrete and psychological spaces. The works selected for Immaterial will call into question a variety of issues: the complex relationships between color and form; the artist's confrontation of the medium and its materiality; the artist's interpretation of time, space, and perception; the intuitive process; and the act of making material immaterial.
To inaugurate Immaterial, Ballroom Marfa will host a weekend of festivities, including an opening reception on Friday, 1 October, 6-8 pm; an exhibition walkthrough with the artists on Saturday, 2 October, 2 pm; and a live music performance by Ty Segall on Saturday evening, 2 October, 9 pm. Segall, who buries '60s sing-alongs and dance crazes within waves of reverb and thud, is carving out his own brand of neo-psych garage alongside San Francisco bands, Sic Alps and Thee Oh Sees. After making his way out of the Bay Area garage scene with a one-man-band, Segall has given up the solo act for a three-piece that destroys sonic and melodic boundaries with manic glee.
These events are free and open to the public.
Immaterial has been made possible through the support of the Texas Commission on the Arts and the Cowles Charitable Trust, with generous contributions by Suzanne Deal Booth, Peter and Hilary Hatch, Peter Blum Gallery, New York, and Ballroom Marfa members.
