Ice Plant, Oak St, Marfa

Description:

Started in 1992, this program is designed to meet the needs of area school children in Kindergarten through eighth grades. The series, offered and fully subscribed every summer, is taught by experienced instructors both from Texas and outside the area who draw upon the foundation's collection and facilities to enrich classroom and studio activities. Chinati's Summer Art Classes are free to all participants.

This year's classes will be offered to students entering Kindergarten through 8th grade, and taught for the fourth year by Michael Roch, as well as other local artists and educators.

Classes meet Monday through Thursday, June 14 through July 1.

Students entering Kindergarten and 1st grades: 9-10 AM
Students entering 2nd-4th grades: 1-2:30 PM
Students entering 5th-8th grades: 3:30-5 PM
The first day of classes, Monday, June 14, all sections will meet at the above times at the Chamberlain building in downtown Marfa. All remaining classes will take place at the former Ice Plant building.

Marfa Public Radio (KRTS, 93.5 FM) is pleased to welcome three summer interns to the station. KRTS is celebrating their arrival this Friday evening with a reception from 6-9 p.m. at the Q Cafï¿½ and Wine Bar at the Marfa Guest Quarters.

Grace Vroom, Peter McCrady, and Rachel Neel will spend this summer assisting station activities, producing radio programming, and learning first-hand how a community supported, non-commercial radio station operates.

This Friday evening, the public is encouraged to come out, meet the new interns, and mingle with friends and neighbors. The Q Cafï¿½ and Wine Bar has generously agreed to donate a portion of all beverage sales to KRTS. All proceeds will support public broadcasting in Far West Texas. The Q Cafe is located at 109 W. San Antonio Street in Marfa.

Description:

Everyone is invited to a special exhibition of artwork by students in Chinati's Summer Art Classes on Friday, July 2 from 5 - 8 PM at the Ice Plant on East Oak Street in Marfa. The event is free and open to the public and will feature the grand premiere of the student films, with popcorn and other refreshments for all!
Over the past two weeks, students in Kindergarten through 8th grade have directed and produced their own animated films with local artists Jennifer Lane and David Hollander and crafted furniture out of some surprising materials with instructor Michael Roch. This week, students will design and build a special hand-made theatre space with designer Peter Stanley where folks can sit back, relax and enjoy these colorful and delightful movies during the opening.

Description:

Kids Paper Bag and Paint Workshop at MSA, Saturday July 10

MSA invites kids and adults to work with artist Nick Terry this Saturday, July 10, 1:00-3:00. Pre-registration is not required and visitors to Marfa are welcome. The project will involve working with paper bags and paint. Bags will be cut, folded, collaged and painted with each artist creating their own unique work of art. Bags will be provided but if the artist has one that is appealing, it may be brought to the workshop.

Nick Terry is an abstract painter who exhibits his work widely. This is a rare opportunity for kids and adults to work with him in an informal and supportive environment.

Presidio County 4-H Leaders Set Organizational Meeting

"Have you ever imagined how much of a difference you can make in a young persons life?, asked County Extension Agent Jesse Lea Schneider. "Your time and knowledge are priceless to the youth of our community, and being a 4-H Leader offers you a prime opportunity!"

Current leaders and those interested in being a 4-H Leader in Presidio County will meet on Wednesday July 21st, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. at the Presidio County Abstract Office in Marfa. Kickoff plans will be made, leaders will be registered, and goals put in place for the upcoming 4-H year.

Leaders are needed in a variety of interests in Presidio Counties growing and diverse club. Organizational leaders, fund raising, project leaders and assistants " from A to Z" are all needed for the 2010-11 4-H year.

1/2 Marathon Run, 10K Run, 5K Walk

Join us for the 1/2 Marathon Run, 10K Run, or 5K Walk on July31, 2010.

Featuring a scenic course at an elevation of about 4700 feet above sea level and excellent weather, Marfa is the perfect destination for the weekend at the end of July where you can combine the Blackwell School Reunion on July 30-August 1, 2010 and the races on July 31st in the highland country of Texas.

Start Time: 6:00 a.m. for the 1/2 Marathon racers. 7:00 a.m. for the 10K and 5k racers.
Route: A bus will transport racers and starters to the starting point out on the Ruidosa Highway. Runners and walkers will return to end up at Blackwell School.
